What Makes A Carrot Tail Leopard Gecko?

What Makes A Carrot Tail Leopard Gecko?

In the 1970’s, where the first carrot tail leopard gecko was presented in the pet market, little information was known about the said creature. Before they were brought to the United States to be sold as pets, they were seen in the wild. They were grouped into species and subspecies. And because this is not known by then, careless breeding were rampant with no respect to the original appearance. That is why; this kind of breeding came out with different genetic alterations for the leopard geckos that we normally observed today.

Nowadays, these genetic alterations are called morphs. They are called morphs because of the presence of different sizes and colors and their genetics in contrast to the common ones. There genetic traits can be passed on or can be inherited by the next generation of the leopard gecko.

The error in the genetics of the leopard geckos are showing compared to the normal leopard geckos. And this is the reason why they are prone to be attacked first by their preys in the wild because they simply stand out from the others. But they are now acceptable and in the market. There are different morphs; one is Enigma who belongs to the dominant group; the Blizzards and the MurphtyPatternless that is included in the recessive morph category. The S.H.T.C.T., on the other hand belongs to the polygenetic morphs; for the complete dominant type, they have the Macksnow; and the R.A.P.T.O.R.S that belongs to the combo morph; and the co-dominant, Giant.

The different moprhs today had been developing the carrot tail trait. Albey’s Tangerine and the R.A.P.T.O.R.S are the usual leopard gecko to have this. But they can also be seen in other breed like the Murphy Patternless and in Blizzards.

If the tail has more than the average amount of orange color, it is defines as a carrot tail leopard gecko. Commonly seen among the leopard gecko are the orangey color on the tail but there are cases that 90 percent of the tail of a leopard gecko is covered. A mere 15-20 percent is enough for the tail to be covered by orange to be considered a carrot tail leopard gecko. Although, some leopard gecko has their tail totally covered, there are others that have small band covering.

Line breeding is the method where the carrot tail trait can be passed on. The possibility of an offspring that has the carrot tail trait is higher if you breed a male and female leopard gecko that has the same trait. But if you are not contented with the outcome, you can still repeat it, this time, with other partners.

You can also line bred the carrot head trait. The carrot head is the existence of spots in orangey color in the head of a leopard gecko. But this can only be found among Tremper albinos only.

Breeding a carrot tail leopard gecko can be done by anyone if they have the space, the time and the resources needed. If they are not disposed or sold immediately, be prepared to rake care of them until they are sold. There are rewards that we can get in breeding leopard geckos that is why working hard for it is important.
